Xenology — The Sericatus (Class II)
Doctrinal designation — Genus Sericatus, “the Silked”.
- Threat classification — Class II: Strategic Infiltration Threat.
- Service vernacular — “the Silk”, authorised in Office and Commissariat registers only.
- First documented evidence — 02-11-1954: the Aldermast registry forgeries, traced to a non-human principal.
- Physical specimens on record — three. 1961, 1987, 2008 — all recovered dead; none recovered intact.
- Current status — active by assessment. No confirmed physical presence inside Republic space at the date of this Article.
- Registry — Registrum Xenologicum II-001.
The Sericatus has been seen three times and detected several hundred times, and that ratio is the species file. It does not arrive in hulls the plot can track. It arrives in ownership structures, registry entries, brokered debts, and patient men who signed something a decade ago and have been signing ever since.
Physical record — three specimens, all dead on recovery
- Gracile biped inside the human silhouette envelope. At dock lighting and habit distance, passable. At close quarters, wrong: joint articulation with too many rest positions; breath cadence that does not vary under stress; facial musculature adequate to expression and indifferent to it.
- Tissue is stable post-mortem, but all three specimens self-terminated at the point of exposure by an implanted chemical mechanism — and the mechanism also degrades the neural mass. What the Republic holds is anatomy. What it wanted was contents.
- No two specimens carried the same organ layout. Either the species is plastic to an unprecedented degree, or what the Republic has recovered are grown instruments rather than citizens of anything. The Office holds the second hypothesis as working.
Operational record — the detected presence
- The Sericatus does not, on any documented occasion, act directly. It acquires human hands — financiers, registrars, brokers, the occasional sworn officer — through intermediated inducement chains long enough that the third link frequently does not know the first. The Republic's term of art for the acquired human is not “agent”. It is heretic, and the prosecution is the Commissariat's, by the ordinary channels.
- Its objective, wherever the Office has reconstructed one, is position, not damage: standing access to registries, cargo attestation chains, promotion boards — the load-bearing paperwork of human civilisation. Sabotage is rare, late, and surgical. The Silk does not burn what it can eventually own.
- Timescale is generational. The Aldermast reconstruction (1954–1969) established insertion work begun at minimum fifteen years before its first observable effect.
Where the Vorax floods, the Sericatus threads.
- Acquisition. A human hand with registry access or fiduciary standing is identified and indebted — financially, socially, or by manufactured compromise. The approach is always deniable and always lawful-seeming at first contact.
- Normalisation. The hand performs ordinary duties for years. The Silk's alterations ride inside the ordinary at a rate the audit cannot economically distinguish from error.
- Position. Compromised entries compound. Ownership migrates. Attestation chains grow quiet dependencies. Nothing announces itself; the structure is simply, one audit later, no longer entirely human-held.
- Withdrawal. At exposure, the human hand is abandoned to prosecution — the inducement chain collapses backward, and the principal is gone. The three physical specimens were all recovered at this stage, at the far end of chains that someone finally pulled fast enough. All three self-terminated.
Principal cases, as held by the registry.
- 02-11-1954 — The Aldermast registry forgeries. First non-human principal established by the Office; fourteen human heretics purged.
- 12-06-1961 — Specimen 1, the Aldermast follow-on. Physical recovery (dead); species registered.
- 1969–2008 — The Long Audit, a registry-integrity campaign. Two further specimens (1987, 2008); interdiction doctrine written.
- 03-04-2019 — The Vessey Chain: fiduciary insertion, ring-route logistics. Chain collapsed; nine heretics Non Admittendi; principal not recovered.
- Standing — no confirmed physical presence inside Republic space at the date of this Article. The Office treats the absence as posture, not victory.
Posture is fixed by the classification system: surveillance, containment, interdiction. No diplomatic engagement without High Command sanction — and none has ever been sought, because the Sericatus has never presented anything to engage. There is no embassy of the Silk. There are only its hands, and its hands are human, and human hands that serve it are heretics and are answered as heretics.
The doctrinal response is therefore double-bladed by design:
- The species is interdicted — registry integrity, attestation audit, the passive-sweep architecture, counter-acquisition screening at fiduciary chokepoints. This blade is the Office's.
- The hands are prosecuted — by Doctrinal Flag or, where the four criteria stand, by Ius Gladii Universalis. This blade is the Commissariat's. The heretic is not excused by having been acquired. The chain is an explanation, never a defence.
The count creed governs even here: the acquired hand is judged by acts — but the acts of a Silk asset are precisely what the record reads, and the record has been sufficient in every prosecuted case.
Origin. Population. Whether the recovered specimens are the species or its instruments. The upper bound of current penetration — the Office's working assumption is that the Long Audit found what it was able to find. What the Silk ultimately wants position for. Whether anything in the dark trades with anything else.
The vernacular “the Silk” is restricted to Office and Commissariat registers — it does not appear in recruitment or public instruments, where the species is referenced only by class: a documented Class II threat.
The Republic does not dramatise the Sericatus into omnipresence. The doctrine's assessment is patient competence, not omnipotence, and inflation of the threat is its own small service to it.
- Physical nature — gracile biped inside the human silhouette envelope; passable at distance, wrong at close quarters.
- Scale — human-scale (~1.6–1.9 m); within the human envelope by design.
- Silhouette — human-passable biped; too many joint rest-positions; expression adequate and indifferent.
- Integument — skin-analogue, dock-lighting passable; no two recovered specimens organ-identical.
- Locked palette — muted human tones; the grey of a self-terminated specimen on the Office slab.
- Visual anchors — the human silhouette worn as instrument, right at distance and wrong up close; breath cadence that does not vary under stress; the implanted self-termination mechanism; presence read in registries and ledgers, not on a plot.
- Distinguishing marks — none fixed. Plasticity, or grown-instrument variance between specimens.
Render gate — PERMITTED
Framing: close-quarters “the wrong human”, or the Office slab with a recovered specimen. Never sympathetic; never the acquired human as victim-hero.
- No interiority. Never sympathetic.
- Never render as an “improved human”. The difference is the point.
- In prose the species is rarely on-page. The drama is the human hand and the chain; a specimen appears at most at the far end of a pulled chain, dead.
