The Cohors Vigilia is the Republic's intelligence arm. It assesses threats, classifies enemies under the Three Pillars, monitors hostile movements, and supports the Doctrinal Flag triage process of the Holy Office.
It operates on a semi-compartmented cell structure: information is distributed need-to-know, cell by cell. Two operational orientations sit beside each other:
- Vigilantia Externa — alien threats, hostile factions, external military movements.
- Vigilantia Interna — heresy detection, infiltration prevention, Doctrinal Flag support.
Both answer to the Praefectus Vigiliae; they operate in separate cells with restricted cross-knowledge.
- Branch (Cohors Vigilia) — all intel personnel — Praefectus Vigiliae.
- Section (Sectio) — 2–4 cells — Centurio — Analysator Primus.
- Cell (Cellula) — 3–6 analysts — Decanus — Caput Cellae.
- Watch (Vigilia) — 2–3 analysts — senior Miles.
- Analyst (Miles Analysator) — individual — Miles.
Cells are designated by Greek letters within each section. Cross-cell communication requires Centurio authorisation.
Compartmentalisation doctrine
- Miles knows only their cell's mission.
- Decanus knows their cell + adjacent cell summaries within the same section.
- Centurio knows the full section + section-level summaries of the other section.
- Praefectus holds full operational awareness.
- Praetor receives final products only.
Cross-cell coordination via Praefectus-designated Task Coordinator. Vigilantia Interna coordinates bilaterally with Inquisitio Sacra on heresy/infiltration matters.

All products are classified at source; no product leaves the Vigilia without Centurio sign-off.
Reading notes
- The Vigilia does not act on its findings — it reports them. Execution belongs to Cohors Arma (external) or Holy Office (doctrinal).
- Cell membership is not publicly known within the Republic.
- Vigilantia Interna activates on referral, not recreationally.
- Frontis and Vigilia are paired long-range eyes.
- Operational security is everyone's responsibility.
